What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

What is GEO?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the process of improving the information and authority signals that help AI-driven search and answer systems understand and reference a brand.

The term is relatively new. The underlying work is not magical: content, entities, sources, technical access and measurement. GEO is a way of organizing that work around generative answers rather than only around blue links.

GEO definition

GEO asks: if a buyer uses a generative engine to compare solutions in your category, can the system retrieve accurate facts about you, associate you with the right use cases, and point to sources a reader could trust?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is a closely related label, often used for featured-snippet and question-shaped content. AI visibility is the outcome being measured. GEO is the improvement work aimed at generative systems. The labels overlap; the measurement should still be specific.

Relationship to SEO

GEO is not a replacement for SEO. Search engines, websites and publications remain important sources. A GEO program that ignores crawlability, internal linking and organic landing pages is incomplete. A fuller comparison is in SEO vs GEO.

Content

Content work for GEO is less about stuffing a keyword and more about covering the actual questions buyers ask, with extractable facts, evidence and clear structure. See citation-ready content and AI content optimization.

Entities

If the brand, products and category relationships are inconsistent, retrieval systems have less to latch onto. Entity and brand authority work is often part of GEO even when the website already has many articles.

Citations and authority

Generative answers frequently rest on a small set of third-party sources. If those sources omit you, on-site changes alone may not be enough. That is why digital PR can belong in a GEO roadmap.

Technical foundations

Pages that cannot be crawled, that are duplicated, or that hide primary content in inaccessible JavaScript are harder to retrieve. Technical SEO for AI discovery covers crawl rules, structured data and information architecture. Structured data does not guarantee AI visibility; it can make facts easier to interpret when it is valid.

Measurement

Without a prompt baseline, GEO becomes a content calendar with extra jargon. Measurement is described in How to measure AI visibility and delivered as AI search monitoring.

Limitations

GEO cannot force a model to mention a company. There is no universal ranking position. Results vary by platform and over time. Anyone offering guaranteed ChatGPT citations is selling certainty the systems do not provide.

AO Agency’s GEO service starts from those limits: improve the signals, then measure whether visibility changes.

Discuss a GEO strategy

If organic search is already in place but AI answers still omit or misdescribe your brand, GEO work should start with a measured baseline.
